Distant Violins #1 (July 1982)

An early Christmas gift to end this complex year – the very first edition of Distant Violins (Winter 1982). Featuring The Moodists, The Go-Betweens, Altered Images, Bryce Perrin, Systematics, a meticulously proofread crossword, comics and more. All at the friends’ price of free. Thanks to Darren Vandenburg for the scan. Enjoy.

Distant Violins #4 (Feb-March 1983)

DV 4 has been sourced – thanks to DV fan Darren Vandenburg – and it’s a goodie too – with pieces on The Reels, The Fall and (the late) Patrick Gibson. Also included is David’s reply from Countdown about the ‘progressive’ band, The Go-Betweens.

Everything’s Roses

Related to the Distant Violins publishing empire was this great non-music zine from 1984 called Everything’s Roses – a collaborative work from David Nichols and Megan Edwards. The letters page is killer. Side issue, I also have the original of the cover illustration hanging on my study wall. Nice.

Distant Violins #5 (1983)

We have to skip DV#4 as I don’t have it. See the DV Page for the others I’m looking for.

#5 is the subtitled The Curse Of the Go-Betweens with a feature interview, an article on The Curse, live reviews (The Birthday Party, Corpse Grinders, The Scientists), a crossword and comics.

Distant Violins #3 (Dec-Jan ’82-’83)

We’re back for more with Distant Violins #3, the self-proclaimed “absolutely fab issue” with ┬áHunters & Collectors, MEO 245, David Chesworth, the second part of the articles on The Birthday Party (“part II and still not over”) and The Fall, more reviews. There’s also “not much else”. Enjoy.

Distant Violins #3

Distant Violins #2 (August 1982)

For the first time ever, as far as I know, TOYTOWN is making David Nichols’ fanzine Distant Violins available in PDF form, free to download.

Apart from a super cover illustration #2 features articles on the red Crayola’s Epic Soundtracks, Plays With Marionettes, People With Chairs Up Their Noses (now that’s a band name) and interviews with The Birthday Party and The Fall. Also reviews, comics and whatnot.

Starting with the first edition I own Distant Violins #2 (August 1982) [pdf file]
